James Bond You Only Live Twice (1967)
“You Only Live Twice” is a classic James Bond movie from 1967, featuring Sean Connery as Agent 007. Directed by Lewis Gilbert, the film is the fifth installment in the iconic James Bond franchise, produced by Eon Productions. The script was written by Roald Dahl and is loosely based on Ian Fleming’s 1964 novel of the same name. This James Bond movie is unique as it discards most of the original plot and introduces an entirely new story, using only a few characters and locations from the novel as a backdrop.
In the movie, Bond is sent to Japan to investigate the mysterious disappearance of American and Soviet spacecrafts during the Cold War, each nation blaming the other. Bond travels to a remote Japanese island where he uncovers the involvement of the evil Ernst Stavro Blofeld and his criminal organization SPECTRE, who are working for a government of an unnamed Asian power. The film marks the first time that Blofeld’s face is shown on screen.
During the filming in Japan, Sean Connery announced his retirement from the role of Bond, but he later returned to play the character in 1971’s “Diamonds Are Forever” and 1983’s “Never Say Never Again.” Despite the oversaturation of spy movies and a competing Bond film “Casino Royale,” “You Only Live Twice” received positive reviews and grossed over $111 million worldwide.
The film follows Bond as he navigates his way through Tokyo and Kobe, uncovering the mysteries behind the disappearance of the spacecrafts and battling SPECTRE agents. Bond trains with ninjas and goes undercover as a Japanese person, marrying a local Ama diving girl, to get closer to the truth. Bond eventually finds SPECTRE’s base inside a volcano, operated by Blofeld, where he confronts the villain and saves the world from a potential war.
“You Only Live Twice” is a thrilling James Bond movie that showcases Agent 007’s cunning and bravery, making it a must-watch for fans of the franchise.
