James Bond GoldenEye (1995)

GoldenEye is a James Bond movie that was released in 1995 and is the seventeenth installment in the James Bond movie series. This film marks the first appearance of Pierce Brosnan as the iconic MI6 agent James Bond. Directed by Martin Campbell, GoldenEye was the first Bond film that did not feature any elements from the works of Ian Fleming, the creator of the James Bond character. The film was also the first in the series not produced by Albert R. Broccoli, who had stepped down from Eon Productions and was replaced by his daughter, Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson.

GoldenEye tells the story of Bond as he works to prevent a rogue ex-MI6 agent, played by Sean Bean, from using a satellite weapon to cause a financial meltdown in London. This film was the first Bond film made after the end of the Cold War, which provided a backdrop for the plot. Principal photography took place in the UK, Russia, Monte Carlo, and Puerto Rico, with Leavesden Studios being the first film production shot at the studio. GoldenEye was also the first Bond film to use computer-generated imagery (CGI) and was dedicated to the memory of special effects supervisor Derek Meddings, who passed away after the film was released.

GoldenEye was a critical and commercial success, grossing over $350 million worldwide and receiving positive reviews for Brosnan’s performance as Bond and the film’s special effects. The Goldeneye James Bond film was nominated for several awards, including Best Special Visual Effects and Best Sound from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts.

The plot of GoldenEye begins in 1986, when Bond and Alec Trevelyan infiltrate a Soviet chemical weapons facility in Arkhangelsk. Bond destroys the site and escapes, while Trevelyan is assumed killed. Nine years later, Bond is sent to investigate a satellite attack in Severnaya, Siberia, and discovers that the attack was caused by a Soviet-era satellite thats armed with a nuclear electromagnetic pulse space-based weapon called GoldenEye. Bond travels to Saint Petersburg and discovers that Trevelyan, who had faked his death, is leading the Janus crime syndicate and seeking revenge against Britain. Bond is captured by Trevelyan, but escapes with a survivor of the Severnaya attack, Natalya Simonova. The pair travel to Cuba to stop Boris Grishenko, who is working for Janus, from using the second GoldenEye satellite. Bond and Natalya infiltrate the hidden base beneath a lake and sabotage the satellite, preventing it from devastating London. Bond and Natalya escape just before the base is destroyed, and prepare to enjoy some solitude together before being interrupted by a hidden team of U.S. Marines, disguised as bushes, who escort them to Guantanamo base.
