James Bond On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (1969)
On Her Majesty’s Secret Service is the 6th movie in the James Bond film franchise produced by Eon Productions. The movie was released in 1969 and is based on the novel by Ian Fleming published in 1963. George Lazenby, a model with no prior acting experience, was cast as James Bond after Sean Connery decided to retire from the role.
The movie revolves around Bond’s mission to stop Blofeld (played by Telly Savalas), who plans to hold the world ransom by threatening to render all food plants and livestock infertile. During his mission, Bond meets and falls in love with Contessa Teresa di Vicenzo (played by Diana Rigg), eventually marrying her.
Directed by Peter R. Hunt, who had previously served as a film editor and second unit director on previous James Bond movies, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service was a more realistic and faithful adaptation of the novel. The movie was filmed in Switzerland, England, and Portugal from October 1968 to May 1969. Although it was not as successful as its predecessor You Only Live Twice, the film still performed well at the box office and has received critical acclaim over the years, now considered one of the strongest entries in the James Bond film series.
In the film, Bond meets Tracy, a woman he saves from drowning on the beach, at a casino. She invites Bond to her hotel room, but he is attacked upon arrival. Bond returns to his room to find Tracy and they soon learn that Bond has been kidnapped by several men, including the one he fought, who take him to meet Marc-Ange Draco. Draco reveals that Tracy is his daughter and offers Bond one million pounds to marry her, but Bond refuses and instead agrees to continue romancing Tracy if Draco helps him track down Ernst Stavro Blofeld.
Bond eventually learns that Blofeld is planning to hold the world ransom by threatening to destroy its agriculture using his brainwashed women. Bond enlists the help of Draco and rescues Tracy from Blofeld’s headquarters, destroying the facility in the process. Bond and Tracy marry and drive away in Bond’s Aston Martin DBS, only for Blofeld to catch up and attack them. The movie ends with Bond taking down Blofeld and saving the world.
