James Bond Casino Royale (2006)
Casino Royale is a 2006 James Bond movie, the 21st film in the iconic James Bond series produced by Eon Productions. Directed by Martin Campbell, the film stars Daniel Craig as James Bond in his debut role, alongside actors Eva Green, Mads Mikkelsen, Judi Dench, and Jeffrey Wright. The film is a screen adaptation of Ian Fleming’s 1953 novel of the same name and follows Bond as he takes on the task of bankrupting a terrorist financier, Le Chiffre (Mikkelsen), in a high-stakes poker game at the Casino Royale in Montenegro.
Eon Productions decided to reboot the James Bond franchise following the release of Die Another Day (2002) with a focus on exploring a more vulnerable and less experienced Bond. Daniel Craig’s casting as Bond sparked controversy but was met with critical acclaim for his reinvention of the character. Principal photography took place in various locations, including the Bahamas, Italy, United Kingdom, and the Czech Republic, featuring mostly practical stuntwork rather than CGI effects.
Casino Royale premiered in the Odeon Leicester Square on November 14, 2006, and was released in the UK on November 16 and in the US on November 17. The film received positive reviews and grossed over $616 million worldwide, becoming the fourth highest-grossing film of 2006 and the highest-grossing James Bond film until the release of Skyfall (2012). The film’s success prompted the release of its sequel, Quantum of Solace, in 2008.
