James Bond Tomorrow Never Dies (1997)
Tomorrow Never Dies is a 1997 spy film that is part of the James Bond movie franchise produced by Eon Productions. The film stars Pierce Brosnan as James Bond, a fictional MI6 agent, and is directed by Roger Spottiswoode, with a screenplay by Bruce Feirstein. The film follows Bond as he tries to stop a power-hungry media mogul, Elliot Carver (Jonathan Pryce), from starting World War III.
The film was produced by Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, and was the first Bond film after the death of producer Albert R. Broccoli. It was also the last Bond film released under the United Artists label and was filmed in locations like France, Thailand, Germany, Mexico, and the UK.
Tomorrow Never Dies was a commercial success, grossing over $333 million worldwide and becoming the fourth-highest-grossing film of 1997, despite mixed reviews. The film received a Golden Globe nomination and was Brosnan’s second Bond film after GoldenEye, but was the only one not to open at No. 1 at the box office.
The film’s plot revolves around Bond being sent by MI6 to reconnoiter a terrorist arms bazaar on the Russian border, where he discovers two nuclear torpedoes. The media baron, Elliot Carver, plans to use an encoder obtained from the bazaar to start a war between China and the UK. Bond is sent to investigate Carver and his company and must stop Carver from destroying most of the Chinese government with a stolen missile. Along the way, Bond partners with Wai Lin, a Chinese agent, to prevent Carver from firing the missile at Beijing. Bond and Wai Lin board Carver’s stealth ship, and after a series of events, Bond ends up killing Carver and saving Wai Lin as the missile explodes, destroying the ship.
